Let’s talk stress

National Stress Awareness Day (1st November) is a valuable reminder for employers to pause and reflect on how they can better support their people in managing one of the most common workplace challenges.

One in nine adults (11 %) report feeling stressed every single day, and over half (60 %) feel stressed five or more days a month. That’s a big problem, because stress doesn’t just affect how people feel – it can seriously impact both physical and mental wellbeing, as well as productivity. Work-related stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 16.4 million working days lost in 2023/24, making up nearly half of all work-related ill health days.

Employers have a legal duty to protect their workers from stress at work, but beyond compliance, fostering a supportive culture and equipping managers to recognise the early signs can make a real difference to both the wellbeing and performance of their teams.

Here are four simple ways to ease employee stress.

  1. Allow extra breaks when needed – and encourage outdoor time
If someone’s feeling or showing signs of stress, even a short 10 to 15-minute break can help them mentally reset. Movement and daylight boost mood, creativity and resilience, so encourage walking meetings or fresh-air breaks where possible.
  2. Create spaces that support healthy breaks
Ensure there’s a dedicated space where staff can step away from work and take a proper lunch break. Having somewhere to unwind or chat with colleagues supports wellbeing and helps build a more connected, positive workplace culture. High-caffeine and sugary drinks and snacks can worsen stress symptoms, so try offering healthier alternatives like fruit, nuts, seeds and herbal teas.
  3. Improve stress awareness
Circulate short guides or webinars or provide training to help employees and managers recognise signs of stress in themselves and others. Encouraging open conversations about stress and mental health within teams helps reduce stigma and makes it easier for people to speak up if they’re struggling, ensuring signs aren’t missed and supporting early intervention.
  4. Shout about the support you offer
Making sure employees know how to access support if they need it is a key part of building a positive mental health culture where staff feel safe asking for help. Whether it’s an app, an Employee Assistance Programme or a team of Mental Health First Aiders, use awareness days as opportunities to promote the support available within your business.
