Building the green skills workforce of tomorrow: NWSLC shortlisted for two national sustainability awards.

North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College (NWSLC) is celebrating a significant achievement after being shortlisted for two prestigious national sustainability awards, highlighting its commitment to developing the green skills that will shape the workforce of tomorrow. The College has been named a finalist in the Next Generation Learning and Skills category of the UK and Ireland Green Gown Awards and has also secured a place among the final six contenders for the Education Award at the National Sustainability Awards 2026.

The recognition comes as a result of NWSLC’s innovative Power Up Your Potential programme, which helps students develop valuable skills beyond their main area of study, including a strong focus on citizenship and sustainability. Developed in partnership with business leaders, the programme ensures students gain practical sustainability knowledge and behaviours that employers increasingly value across every sector. More than 700 students have already been recognised for demonstrating sustainability-related skills through the initiative.

At NWSLC, sustainability is not viewed as a standalone topic. It is embedded into the way students learn, think and prepare for their future careers. Through activities ranging from community volunteering and reducing food waste to creating sustainable products and supporting social impact projects, students are developing the mindset and skills needed to contribute positively to a changing world.

The college’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its student community. Through a growing range of sustainability-focused training opportunities, NWSLC is helping businesses upskill their workforce, understand emerging environmental challenges and prepare for the opportunities that the green economy presents. This includes free* online distance learning courses and specialist provision delivered through the MIRA Technology Institute, where learners and employers can access cutting-edge training in the technologies and skills that are driving the UK mobility sectors transition to net zero.
