Lifelong Learning for a Changing World: Creating a flexible framework: working with business and micro-credentials.

In recent years there has been increasing recognition of the need for a more flexible approach to professional learning, in particular through the use of digital technologies and micro-credentials to enhance skills through short learning experiences and to make learning more learner-centred and accessible (European Commission, 2020). Micro-credentials (basically means module by another name!) appears to be a term that is now recognised in the University sector but not used in business, and we want to create a greater understanding on how these can be utilised to progress knowledge but also gain a recognised award.

FutureLearn’s (2021) The Future of Learning Report notes that although digital learning was accelerated by Covid, its popularity means that traditional norms in education are evolving alongside a renewed focus on career change and development. Technology enables a more flexible and personalised route to engage with accreditation and this is particularly true for women, entrepreneurs, career changers and Gen Z /millennials.

There needs to be a greater focus on flexible and stackable approaches to learning for professionals and against this background Nottingham Business School has introduced a new approach to micro-credentials and the creation of a flexible award framework to allow individuals and businesses to take a ‘bite-sized’ approach to building to a qualification. We have created a Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management Practice that professional learners can work towards in a period of up to 8 years, with choices of micro-credentials (modules) to be studied, either online or face to face. This allows a greater freedom in an individual being able to choose their own path of learning and removes the more linear approach of traditional degree programmes.

You can start any of the nine online micro-credentials at any point throughout the year and can study at your own pace.
